“Anyone watch a good movie lately? Can you recommend an art house crime film shot on anamorphic film in the 2010s with handheld camera movement on Netflix?”

If you’ve ever watched a movie solely because it got good reviews on Rottentomatoes and been disappointed, this site might be what you’ve been looking for. A lot of these movie databases have a rating system that don’t accurately represent how good the film is or whether it is worth watching. So the films on this list will largely comprise of those in the spotlight, notable popular movies with supposedly high reviews to check if they are really worth the watch. But I have also incorporated cinematography related filters to narrow the criteria if you care more about the visual experience when watching a film.

The purpose of this site is to recommend films for cinema lovers. The ratings are qualitative, so anything above a 3 is already good. I’m not going to review every movie I’ve ever seen (some would be pointless) so movies that make this list already tend to be great. There are some cases where the rating may be lower because I didn’t think the story was that good or the film simply didn’t excite me even if cinematography or other aspects are great and vice versa.

A film’s merit considers many things: a comedy for how funny it is, a horror for how scary it is, and we naturally react to films differently based on their genre or how seriously the plot treats itself. What I consider a good film may be different than you, especially because of my bias for cinematography, substantial writing and indifference toward certain genres like romance.
