Ghost in the Shell (1995)
The greatest animated sci-fi film.

Although this film comes a decade after Akira, it’s overall a better story with polished motivated characters and superior world building. The story in the Ghost in the Shell franchise is truly thought provoking, inspiring future films like The Matrix and Blade Runner 2049. The animation looks fantastic with iconic invisibility scenes and high-tech cyberpunk imagery. The Major is also iconic with the memorable Tokyo backdrop for her satisfying cop beat down action. What makes this film a masterpiece is the intricate storytelling and themes of humanity, consciousness and purpose. With haunting music and long expositions, the presentation and mood is always eerie and introspective for an unforgettable experience that should shake your ghost from within.
Conclusion:
If you enjoyed this film, I think the sequels are also great, though don’t quite reach the same greatness. The story still has substance, just not the same level of presentation. This is one of the most influential films for me and partly where CleverGhost originates from. It’s also one of the best sci-fi cyberpunk films, let alone animes. No other genre can allow for such complex themes without feeling disjointed. Have you ever seen a convincing or effective existential comedy or historical movie? This is why sci-fi exists. A must watch for any fans of sci-fi or philosophy.
