Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
This animation lifts the limits of what's possible with storytelling.
Presentation:
This is one of the best looking animations from the west. As there are 3 directors to allow unique visuals to convince you the characters and scenes are from other dimensions. The film is colorful and stylish and the pacing is tight but intimate when needed.
Story:
The film is long, but doesn't feel that way. At the end of the movie, you'll want to watch the sequel right away. We're given a true multiverse story and the animation allows the story to demonstrate infinite possibilities that live action limits. The dramatic scenes are convincing and heartfelt, but i felt like something was missing. There is a lot of dimension to the story but the Miguel Spider Man loses a bit of nuance. Somehow the tone feels a bit to reassuring with the inevitable everything will be okay as you don't really doubt that spider-man will save the day. Even despite the cliffhanger, you never feel as though the stakes are truly there. Spot is also such a goofy villain. But with colorful and delightful characters, this is a fully developed piece that never bores you.
Conclusion:
Even for live action purists, you can't deny the spectacle of this animation. A work of art and a meaningful script that happens to have superhero elements. It may not have groundbreaking complexity compared to more serious films but for animation you can't help but be impressed.
