Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Zombies and shopping malls, what more do you need?

Presentation:

This film is a modern remake of George A. Romeroโ€™s original zombie film, but I think this film is better because itโ€™s more relevant. The mall is such an iconic setting and will forever be associated with zombie movies and something most of us think about as kids (when malls were still popular). The story is great and the social depravity hosts a perfect psychological battleground for the genre. This might also be because thereโ€™s not as much of a focus on zombies, highlighting the intricate struggles of the survivors instead. The collapse of society and social interactions during the end of the world might seem like just a fad, but feels even more plausible today than ever.

Conclusion:

Most zombie films are just mindless slasher films packaged in a dystopian social collapse, but none so perfect depict the dilemmas as this one due to its diverse and equally charismatic cast. Each member has weight and isnโ€™t just a mechanism for zombie chow shock factor. Some zombie movies end up being cartoonish and silly like Zombieland. Some are very serious like I Am Legend. Some are blockbusters more mindless that the zombies it portrays like World War Z. At the end of the day, zombie films are sci-fi in nature and should be grim yet fun. If I were to recommend the most entertaining zombie film that wonโ€™t give you nightmares but walks on just the right tone, this would likely be it.
