Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

The bureaucratic hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Presentation:

The film opens up with a compelling albeit controversial scene, which has been accused of promoting torture. For audiences that are squeamish, it can understandably be difficult to watch bordering on cruelty and deceit, but I think the uproar has been exaggerated. Itโ€™s more of a drama with a tantalizing climax, focusing on the hunt for the terrorist Bin Laden. For those that like political docudramas, this is a great film, but be warned this is not really a fast paced suspense action thriller. Jessica Chastain does an alright job here, I actually felt Jason Clark was the most complex character in the movie but we didnโ€™t get to see more of him. The night vision sequences are very immersive, creatively implemented by the talented Greg Fraiser. However, donโ€™t expect any of his fancy cinematography or modern lighting for this film.

Conclusion:

A slow burn with a rewarding climax. This follows the real events that led to the death of al-Qaedaโ€™s terrorist leader. Itโ€™s more of an intriguing glimpse into American politics and military bureaucracy rather than Hollywood entertainment. If you watch in 2024, I feel it may not have the same impact.
