Zodiac (2007)
Chasing the most infamous serial killer.
Presentation:
You might think an ambiguous real story would be a challenge for Fincher's specific omniscient direction, but still masterfully presents obscurity in a detective noir style. This nostalgic serial killer plot is also well edited with all the filmmaking puzzle pieces that recreate the riveting true story. Story:
This film succeeds in typical Fincher subversion. Despite not wanting to make the ending very clear, the film makes you conclude that a certain killer is definitely the culprit. But then you think, maybe you can't rely on the evidence and you spiral into confusion and wonder. Me personally, I think this is similar to another Korean serial killer film, Memories of Murder where the culprit has been caught all along.
Conclusion:
Sometimes stories like these are the most effective. This kind of resolution has a high risk for such an ambiguous story, but Fincher always finds a way. One of the best scripts Fincher has had his hands on. This is is as cool and close as you can get to chasing a serial killer.
