Hannibal Lecter is best watched with a side of fava beans.
Presentation:
Anthony Hopkins is such a pleasure on screen and this film fully demonstrates why. He simply steals the show no matter what program he appears in with his enigmatic and intriguing presence. For the infamous serial killer cannibal, he never feels cartoonish. Hannibal Lecter feels nuanced, menacing, violent, aggressive, brutal, creepy, while being intelligent, reasonable, crafty, conscientious, fair at the same time. Although overshadowed, Jodie foster also delivers a performance that acts as a vessel for us to stand in the shoes and experience the thrill of a detective fighting against the clock to stop a serial killer.
Conclusion:
An extremely influential serial killer film that revitalized the detective genre to new heights. A fascinating peering into the mind of a serial killer that needs to dramatization when the script is so compelling. Although less cinematic than Fincher detective films, this one is culturally iconic. Enjoy with your side of chianti and fava beans
