My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
An outdated masterpiece.
Presentation:
One of Hayao Miyazaki’s most well known works, which is considered a masterpiece for its time. It looks just as beautiful today with whimsical and fantastical supernatural elements, but is less universal for adults. I don’t know why all little sisters in Japanese anime are so loud and annoying, but it leads to a very poor viewing experience for me even if that’s how children really are. The sootballs are fun and Totoro is quite cute, but it’s nothing special in 2024. A family movie for kids that truly captures childhood essence.
Conclusion:
Considering how creative anime has become, this anime is pretty boring by comparison. It’s more catered toward children and I believe it will not age as well when most of Miyazaki’s films can normally be also enjoyed by adults. Anime today is just more creative, imaginative and has better stories. There’s very little here that hasn’t been improved upon or mastered in future films.
