Spirited Away (2001)
The best introduction into anime film.
Presentation:
Magical, painterly, and beautifully crafted world and characters allow you to escape from the real world. The protagonist Chihiro is actually impressively ordinary, allowing any viewer to fit in the shoes and live vicariously. Mystical elements and meaningful message leave a lasting impression. A masterpiece from legendary Hayao Miyazaki.
Story:
The film borrows a few tropes from Orpheus and Eurydice, don't look back. Pollution is also a common theme for Japanese films, which makes sense if you've ever visited Japan. The film is notable compared to future works as it captures the dark imagination and naivety of youth without lowering the stakes or providing a PG safety net. Realism and mature themes packaged in a childrens film make this truly universal and fitting for all ages.
Conclusion:
This is a magical experience. Although I was young, this is the only film that I watched twice in a row. It's quite incredible what becomes possible through animation and this film takes full advantage of the liberties the medium permits.
