Nightmare Alley (2021)

A neo noir gothic take on a classic formula.

Presentation:

Guillermo Del Toro provides us with a stylistic and comparatively tamer aesthetic, but still evokes a gloomy and pensive visuals. The whole film is a mood, and a brooding one at that. The props, sets and costumes are very fitting for this nightmare carnival ride and is a great spin on the original.

Story:

A classic story of a tragic hero succumbing to hubris. The film has great performances from Bradley Cooper and Rooney Mara, though it's understandably predictable as is the case with any tragic fall. The film still takes you for a ride slowly revealing the true nature of this piece, to uncover the pitfalls of selfish personal gain.

Conclusion:

A tried and true formula repackaged in a shiny new suit may not offer anything new, but we all take comfort in the circles of the carousel.
