The Last Duel (2021)
A perfect showcase of moral ambiguity and bias.
Presentation:
Ridley Scott delivers one of his better movies in medieval France portraying the brutality of medieval civilization. The clash between Adam Driver and Matt Damon takes a backseat to the compelling emotional relationships and politics. The film is told in several perspectives, with each unique portrayal truly allowing you to enter the mind of the characters. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck prove they can still tell compelling stories (based on book).
Conclusion:
A he-said-she-said, though it may not be as subversive as Gone Girl, the ambiguity lends itself to a very fresh experience. Like all things in life, things are not as black and white as they seem. You can easily go from rooting for one character to another simply based on different interpretations of events. It's very well done, highlighting female helplessness and reliance on men in this actual patriarchal system. Perspectives are wonderfully ambiguous allowing for discussion and moral pondering as to which side to root for. Interpretations of similar events are done in a meaningful and non-repetitive manner.
