A Most Violent Year (2014)
It's hard to say why this love letter was made.
Presentation:
The film follows honest businessman Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain in 1981 NYC hardships. Vintage warm aesthetics bring us back in time, but the pacing might leave you wanting to go back sooner than you'd expect. The film is quite slow despite strong performances.
Conclusion:
Although I personally found some great moments of acting, I don't think this is a very good film, leaving you asking, "why bother, why care?" There's no inspiration or purpose to this love story, which feels observatory and neutral. A snap shot of the past, yet no caption. At best this is a slow burn. At worst, you'll fall asleep.
