Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
Can a painting be famous enough for an entire movie?
Presentation:
The story follows artist Johannes Vermeer in the 1600s and how he created one of his most famous works. Itโs a very well known painting that most have seen, but this is not a true story with superficial drama and gossip. Itโs a lovely period piece, slow yet simple, captured through beautiful walks in the park.
Conclusion:
I think one of the most disappointing aspects of this film is that Scarlett Johansson doesnโt capture the essence of the painting. She feels reserved, restrained, uncomfortable, defiant, though these arenโt the attributes of the real girl in the painting. A small detail, but in my opinion a crucial one in order to suspend disbelief. Sometimes expressions set an entire tone for a film, and Johansson doesnโt deliver such a performance when the entire film rests on her portrayal.
