Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)

Can a painting be famous enough for an entire movie?

Presentation:

The story follows artist Johannes Vermeer in the 1600s and how he created one of his most famous works. Itโ€™s a very well known painting that most have seen, but this is not a true story with superficial drama and gossip. Itโ€™s a lovely period piece, slow yet simple, captured through beautiful walks in the park.

Conclusion:

I think one of the most disappointing aspects of this film is that Scarlett Johansson doesnโ€™t capture the essence of the painting. She feels reserved, restrained, uncomfortable, defiant, though these arenโ€™t the attributes of the real girl in the painting. A small detail, but in my opinion a crucial one in order to suspend disbelief. Sometimes expressions set an entire tone for a film, and Johansson doesnโ€™t deliver such a performance when the entire film rests on her portrayal.
