Bobby Fischer Against the World (2011)

When Chess is global war.

Summary:

If you’re a fan of The Queen’s Gambit, this is the orginal material it’s based off of. You might find this film to be much more enjoyable as it’s the real story of the controversial Bobby Fischer. Genius and madness go hand in hand in what I think is an even more dramatic story than the Netflix chess hit, which copies many things from this documentary. And yet, this film happens to be even more exciting in its raw reality. There are other chess stories that are fascinating like the meteoric rise of arguably greater chess player Magnus Carlsen, but there is not nearly as much complexity nor obstacle as Bobby Fischer had. The multiple movies based off this true story never capture the magnitude of this documentary as there is absolutely no need for dramatization of cinema when you have such epic real events to be based on. Love him, hate him, you’ll likely root for him anyway.
