Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

The bureaucratic hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Presentation:

The film opens up with an compelling albeit controversial scene, which has been accused of promoting torture. For audiences that are squeamish, it can understandably be difficult to watch bordering on cruelty and deceit, but I think the uproar has been exaggerated. It’s more of a drama with a tantalizing climax, focusing on the hunt for the terrorist Bin Laden. For those that like political docudramas, this is a great film, but be warned this is not really a fast paced suspense action thriller. Jessica Chastain does an alright job here, I actually felt Jason Clark was the most complex character in the movie but we didn’t get to see more of him. The nightvision sequences are very immersive, creatively implemented by the talented Greg Fraiser. However, don’t expect any of his fancy cinematography or modern lighting for this film.

Conclusion:

A slow burn with a rewarding climax. This follows the real events that led to the death of al-Qaeda’s terrorist leader. It’s more of an intriguing glimpse into American politics and military bureaucracy rather than Hollywood entertainment. If you watch in 2024, I feel it may not have the same impact.
