Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

Proof that you can't replicate Denis Villenueve and Roger Deakins magic.

Presentation:

This film looks nowhere near as good as the original 2015 Sicario by Roger Deakins. You have a new director and direction that simply has a completely different tone. It's doesn't look bad, its just too big of a departure from the original. When watching this film, you may have a few double takes as to whether this is a sequel or prequel to the original. The film is not nearly as subversive as there is no specific threat this time leading to a feeling of swinging through the darkness. Benicio Del Toro is amazing but Josh Brolin has no presence. The girl and boy are supposed to be ambiguous, but i didn't really care for them at all. The script is also quite a mess, opting to not build upon the internal moral struggles of the original and instead giving you a pinball of dramatized turn of events. This will make you appreciate the original director and cinematographer even more.

Conclusion:

The film tries to set up for a sequel, but you have to make this one good enough for audiences to even consider watching it.
