Gravity (2013)
Nothing quite pulls you in like disaster in space.
Presentation:
Alfonso Cuaron and Lubezki team up again for disaster movie in space. Although the setting makes it so Lubezkiβs signature cinematography doesnβt really shine, he remarkably manages to still emulate handheld camera movement even in space. When disaster strikes, it feels super real even if itβs mostly CGI. This is accomplished by a convincing performance by Bullock and intimate closeups with minimal cuts. A visual spectacle with captivating presentation that will catch you off guard.
Conclusion:
A disaster movie that will undoubtedly leave an impression. However, the drama aspects that follow are a bit redundant and donβt offer much new, which is in stark contrast with its powerful opening. Itβs just weird to have a filmβs climax at the beginning rather than toward the end. This makes it so you probably wonβt remember the ending nor events that take place after the first act. Nevertheless, if you wanted to feel the frailty of humanity and oppressive infinity of space, this sci-fi film should pull you in.
