Pearl (2022)
A unique horror/slasher that focuses on story as opposed to the scares.
Presentation:
As the prequel to X, it takes place in the same farm but looks drastically different. Originally supposed to be black in white, the film instead has a unique visual style with Roaring 60s vibes and over saturated technicolor hues. This is very stylish and also looks good as well. Mia Goth has another impressive performance.
Story:
I think i do prefer this film to X. The film has a real story with horror elements though the ending doesn't stand up to scrutiny. It is never explained how the husband reacts or could accept what has transpired, and it is hard to imagine things working out. Despite having a real story with interesting and even relatable conflicts, I didn't find it particularly exciting as the kills were okay, but not as satisfying as they could be.
Conclusion:
Art horror seems to be all the rage, which is nice to see the genre evolving though sometimes it falls flat. This film really could have been a drama without any horror elements and stand up to scrutiny, making the horror elements feel like an afterthought.

No civil war, just a massacre.
