The Lighthouse (2019)
You'd have to be in a particular mood to appreciate this one.
Presentation:
Square format. Film. Black and white. Cinema? It is very artistic and has Kubrickian qualities similar to The Shining. Willem Dafoe steals the show, really pulling you into the madness of it all. Sets are decrepit and barren, just adding to isolating atmosphere. You feel you would go insane more quickly than the characters.
Conclusion:
Isolation and fragility of the human mind. It wants you to be uncomfortable but shock value is not enough to elicit a positive recommendation. Discomfort for the sake of discomfort can be frustrating and doesn't evoke an emotional response from me as I've seen it all. It's surely an experience but felt more like a short story or piece of literature. It's a strong moodpiece that your sophisticated brain will love, will leave your monkey brain wanting more. Could very well be a short story from Hemingway and no one would have noticed. Reminds me of The Shining in some ways, but less emotionally captivating. You either love this or hate it but i have the feeling that fans only enjoy the idea of this film and not the film itself. In trying to showcase insanity through isolation, it succeeds in making the audience feel the same for better or for worse.
