When Evil Lurks (2023)

Gruesome and brutal, this is one bleak addition to the possession genre.

Presentation:

The Spanish film has beautiful Zeiss-like visuals with a very unsettling and uncanny grade. It's too oversaturated adding to the uncomfortable atmosphere. This still has indie film festival vibes but it's an impressive one due to the novel premise.

Story:

The premise is very novel, though has some elements of Bird Box. Chaos ensues due to man's stupidity in properly handling a possessed body. The lore and world building are fun and i could see franchise potential. There is quite a few disturbing imagery and some a bit overdone. Regarding acting, it was very frustrating as nearly everyone is incompetent and for no reason, never listen to the only person that can save them. I really hate these types of films and make me appreciate Peele characters more. It's just annoying and unsatisfying when a story is propelled by character’s negligence. If characters act like this, then yes, they deserve this ending, but we don’t.

Conclusion:

A bleak, gorey film with a unique take on the possession genre. Some parts will leave you frustrated.
