I Saw the Devil (2010)
Korean revenge in a nutshell.
Presentation:
A pretty brutal Korean revenge film with a ton of blood and gore. Choi Min-sik nails the villain instead of the protagonist he played in Oldboy. He’s truly reprehensbile and evil, and you might think he is the devil. It’s a very unique way of presenting the villain, whom is almost a protagonist in presentation. It’s a Korean film so expect shocks, twists and drama. The script is pretty loose and incredulous but the film dances on the edge of taking itself too seriously and mindless slasher entertainment. Lots of plot holes and plot armor, but enjoyable nonetheless. Visuals and special effects are just so-so, action is unexpectedly impressive.
Story:
I just don't understand why this special agent is playing with this criminal and does so in this manner. Why? Is the message not to underestimate evil? Revenge hurts the victim equally? So much plot armor for the villain, he's not really a devil, more like a god in this film.
Conclusion:
This film has a message about revenge, but it doesn’t make sense when the film is clearly revenge porn. It’s not as good as Oldboy, perhaps even a little trashy, but I think many will still enjoy it as a flick with some finding it a frustrating film. The unique presentation of the main villain makes this a recommended film as it should feel fresh.
