Blue Valentine (2010)
A more realistic version of Marriage Story.
Presentation:
The feature is shot on film and digital to illustrate the present and past. A unique structure for a love drama, the film definitely offers something fresh. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams execute their roles very well, though Gosling is perhaps a bit too charismatic for his character.
Story:
The structure is very intriguing bouncing back and forth, and though you know the ending, you are still left hoping something would change. This unique in that even the moments of happiness feel somber as you watch knowing the tragedy that inevitably befalls on the naive couple. The film is nuanced as it doesn't clearly point a single villain, but I can't help but feel the woman is the bad guy in this one.
Conclusion:
Compelling performances, this one offers a realistic perspective, and may sway you on the cruel realities of naive love.
